Frequently asked questions.

It’s completely natural to have questions before starting hypnotherapy — whether you’re curious about how it works, wondering what to expect from a session, or unsure whether it’s right for you.

This page covers some of the most common questions I’m asked, to help you feel more informed and at ease. If there’s anything else you’d like to know that isn’t covered here, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. I’m always happy to provide further information and help you feel confident in taking the next step.

I’m not sure if I can be hypnotised. How do I know if I’m in a trance?

Trance is very ordinary in many ways, and we can experience it many times a day when we’re focused on something, such as watching tv, going to the gym, and knitting, amongst others. Clinical hypnotherapy differs very much from stage hypnosis, which is for entertainment. Contrary to what you might see on stage or screen, you cannot be hypnotised to do anything against your will.

During your guided trance, you will be fully aware and present and in a safe, respectful environment with me as your therapist.

Will I be able to go back to work or drive after my sessions? I don’t want to feel groggy.

Clients I’ve worked with say they feel energised and refreshed, or relaxed and calm, rather than drowsy. However, if you are in any way unsure, you might prefer to have your first session online and see how you feel afterwards.

Can I have some sessions online as well as in person?

Yes. Whether you prefer to have sessions in the comfort of your own home, meet in person, or even a combination of the two, it’s not a problem! If you chose online sessions, they will be held using ‘Zoom’ for which I will send you a link before each session. Zoom is easy to install and use (clients need only opt for the ‘basic’ package, which is free). In-person sessions will be held at my home. Sessions held at a client’s home are considered in certain instances; however, this will need to be discussed in advance.

Some clients may prefer to have their sessions online if they have mobility concerns, or if they feel particularly anxious, for example. Hypnotherapy works just as well online as in-person.

Your service advertises that you work with people from the age of 13. Are parents or guardians present at the sessions?

Parents, guardians, or caregivers are welcome to join the young person at their initial consultation; however, during subsequent sessions, they are requested to wait in a separate room.

Is your practice LGBTQ+ friendly?

Anyone is more than welcome at Holywell Hypnotherapy. I offer a safe, inclusive space where clients can relax and feel comfortable.

I have an assistance dog; can I bring them along to my sessions even if they’re in-person?

Absolutely. In addition, well-behaved pets are also welcome!
