After receiving therapy myself, I became interested in studying complementary therapies, in particular, those that taught me the skills to help me to help myself move forward and become more resilient.
I first studied Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, where I attained my diploma in working with addictions, including eating disorders, and substance use disorders. The focus of CBT is on a client’s problems and issues, challenging maladaptive thoughts and behaviours, through the use of structured assignments and exercises, amongst others.
I then looked at Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy as it concerns working on solutions and towards a preferred future, rather than looking back at problems. This focus drew my attention, in particular, as revisiting the past can be difficult and become a barrier to moving forwards. I liked that SFH is also client-centred and is flexible as it is also client-led, with them being recognised as the expert in their life and what they want to achieve using their own inner skills and resources and at their own pace.
I especially enjoyed being taught about the brain and the workings of the mind in straightforward terms and with examples of how we react to stress, something that we all experience. Understanding why we behave the way we do when dealing with challenges or difficulties, and what we can do to help become the best versions of ourselves, can be life changing.
